About Nii Armah

A member of the Ga tribe, Nii Armah was born in Teshie, a suburb of Ghana’s capital city, Accra. He developed an interest in traditional Ghanaian music and dance from an early age and embarked on a music and dance career. Under the instruction of Emmanuel Gomado, master drummer, dancer and director of the Odehe Dance Company, Nii Armah developed his skills and became the dance leader for the male members of the group.

Throughout his time with ‘Odehe’, Nii Armah performed throughout Ghana. He also taught school students, junior dancers and foreign visitors who participated in the Odehe Centre’s workshop programs. Nii Armah trained and performed with ‘Odehe’ until his departure from Ghana in 1999. He then spent 2½ years in Turkey, where he continued performing and teaching. He moved to Australia in 2002 and is now based in Brisbane, Queensland.

Nii Armah is an inspiring teacher and his African dance workshops are lively and energetic. He has taught dance, drum and singing at many festivals, schools, universities, colleges and community workshops. He is regularly contracted by Brisbane City Council for their ‘Active and Healthy Parks’ Program. Additionally, he teaches drum and dance to members of the Ghana Australia Association’s ‘Kente’ cultural group and he offers private tuition.

Thousands of school children have been mesmerised by Nii Armah’s highly interactive performances. He has been accredited by Education Queensland and is passionate about sharing his culture with students of all ages.

Nii Armah has performed at many high profile government functions and festivals, including the Woodford Folk Festival and Queensland Multicultural Festival. He is well-known for his energy and exuberance and he regularly performs with other African artists. In 2003 he was invited to tour the east coast of Australia with well known Ghanaian percussion and dance ensemble, WALA. Along with Sam Okoth, from Kenya he heads the Brisbane based group ‘Papasa’. This dynamic group present vibrant music and dance which embraces the great diversity of the African continent.
